Happiness is determined by the state of your mind

Science-backed benefits of meditation are varied and numerous. The consistent practice of meditation has a positive impact on the physical, mental and emotional health.

We recognise that stress can adversely impact physical health as such, through the practice of consistent meditation helps to reduce the release of stress hormones in the blood and increase the ability to manage stress better.

Harvard studies have shown how meditation promotes the genes linked to DNA stability and dampen the genes that induce inflammatory response from the body.

By practising meditation consistently, it lowers the heart and respiratory rate, blood pressure and muscle tension which in turn, mitigates stress-induced conditions such as high blood pressure, heart issues, digestive disorders and insomnia.

Relax and renew to live well

Find ways to achieve optimal sleep and rest routine every day.

Your body needs sleep to repair, restore and detoxify which takes place before 3am, so sleeping by at least 10pm supports the body’s natural process for a healthier you.

Our body is 70% water, having a shower before bed goes beyond skin deep and purifies the brain-body system. Best in cold or tepid water in cooler climates.

Sleeping in a completely dark room signals your body’s natural hormones for rest. Electronic devices interferes with the body’s natural sleep hormone, ensure technology-free time at least 1 hr before bedtime.

Doing our part to the best of our abilities

I have always enjoyed reading or watching stories of remarkable individuals, the ordinary to the extraordinary, the impossible to the possible because it inspires me. Stories that bring us optimism, hope and courage. Sometimes, seeing is believing and when a spark is ignited within us, we learn and grow within ourselves that our ability to respond is limitless.

Taylor Harkness, a paramedic, yoga instructor and emergency nurse shares how long nights on the ambulance in turn, has helped him overcome some of the most challenging experiences in his own life. He recounts teamwork, tragedies and true miracles that will always serve as a reminder of his WHY to continue to work in this field.

To know the mind, your body gives a truthful reflection

Science-backed benefits of meditation are varied and numerous. The consistent practice of meditation has a positive impact on the physical, mental and emotional health.

In order to understand the significant physical benefits of meditation for the brain and body system, first we should unpack how chronic stress impacts the body.

Stress causes an increase of natural stress hormones in the blood such as cortisol and  epinephrine. The increase of these in the body raises the blood pressure, heart rate and increase cholesterol levels, disrupts sleep as well as weakens immunity.

Based on research from the University of California, consistent meditation practices prevents the body from releasing stress hormones which effectively helps you better manage stress experienced in daily lives.

Focus on root cause not symptoms to overcome problems

Wangari Maathai known as the mother of trees was responsible for planting over 50 million trees during her lifetime. With a master’s degree in biological sciences and PhD in veterinary anatomy, she was passionate about addressing Kenya’s environmental problems ranging from deforestation, water and food shortages, malnutrition in communities and the death of animals from habitat destruction.

She started the Green Belt Movement which encouraged Kenyan women to plant trees to mitigate deforestation and soil erosion. This movement went on to train over 30,000 women which also enabled them to earn a living. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace.

The only place you can begin the process of change is where you are

The benefits of meditation backed by science are varied and numerous.

Studies have shown how negative thought patterns and problematic emotional reactions compound the harmful effects of stress hormones on the brain.

Scientists have proven how meditation is a powerful tool that strengthens the key brain networks for the better. It promotes positive changes in the brain pathways with visible reduction in stress and mood, increase in focus, attention and memory.

The consistent practise of meditation equips you with a useful mental tool – the ability to create some distance between the cycle of thoughts and emotions and by stepping back, allowing you to respond with reason rather than react to a situation.

Consistency keeps you going

Regular exercise improves mental and emotional wellbeing. It boosts concentration and moods as well as improves sleep. Exercising consistently improves overall health especially cardiovascular. Grounding your feet on grass and exposure to sunlight is key. Exercise keeps you energised, productive and happier.

There’s no one-size-fits-all, find your best form of exercise that you can do consistently daily or at least a few times a week. Easy tip to integrate exercise into your daily routine is to seek out opportunities for movement – commute to work, light walk at lunch, nature walk before dinner etc.
