Words have a great influence on our mind. Whether our inner voice or self-talk is uplifting or self-deflating plays a role in shaping our mindset, our outlook and our actions. We are either our strongest cheerleader or our harshest critic, the choice is ours. Practising self-compassion seems like the most logical, yet few practise it when it comes to one’s self.
We may have a goal in mind but how we get there matters just as much – whether it is coming from a thriving or stressful spirit within ourselves. Are the words in our inner voice uplifting us to be the best we can be or is it critical to the point of self-defeating and self-sabotage. For example, if you had to observe yourself about to run a race, what would you say to yourself? Would it be “you can do this, you are capable” or “why are you nervous, stop panicking” – which would be most helpful in that moment? Which uplifts and which tears you down?
Science-backed benefits of meditation are varied and numerous. The consistent practice of meditation has a positive impact on the physical, mental and emotional health.
“Meditation increases self-awareness by creating a habit of focusing on the present, allowing you to notice your thoughts as they come up,” says Meyer-Tapia. Research shows that practicing meditation can help develop self-awareness, as well as improve impulse control and a person’s relationship with themselves and others.
