Resilience is one’s ability to adapt to life’s difficulties and seek a path forward through challenges. “It’s a flexible mindset that helps you adapt, think critically, and stay focused on your values and what matters most,” says Luana Marques, professor from Harvard Medical School.
Everyone has the ability to be resilient however, one’s capacity to stay resilient can dwindle over time especially if the longer you are in the challenging situation, the harder it can be to cope and stay resilient.
The Dalai Lama’s quote is a useful context to cultivate resilience by starting small with minor stressors as it helps build and strengthen resiliency. When faced with minor stressors, start by being aware of your thoughts and emotions and adopt a broader perspective. This helps slow down the emotional response and our tendency to react to a situation instead of responding with a clear head. By redirecting our negative thoughts, we shift towards positive and productive ones.
