Science-backed benefits of meditation are varied and numerous. The consistent practice of meditation has a positive impact on the physical, mental and emotional health.
We are all familiar with the mental clutter that we experience in rapid fire in our mind. Distressing thoughts keep us awake at night; our emotions can colour our reactions.
Amishi Jha, PhD, an associate professor in the department of psychology at the University of Miami and the director of contemplative neuroscience for UMindfulness share that better cognitive control can help regulate emotions and mood.
“What allows people to have better emotion regulation? It comes down to better attentional control,” Jha says. Meditation creates a mental space between yourself and your thoughts and emotions. “Think of it as being at a psychological distance from your own thoughts so you can watch what’s happening,” Jha explains. “Attention can’t be in two places at once: You can’t be watching a distressing thought and be in the distressing thought at the same time.
Through meditation, you gain greater awareness of your thought habits and the capacity to create a distance from your thoughts and emotions enables you to steer them towards more constructive behaviours.
