Science-backed benefits of meditation are varied and numerous. The consistent practice of meditation has a positive impact on the physical, mental and emotional health.
Dr Denninger, director of research at the Institute for Mind Body Medicine, Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital share that the brain region known as the amygdala or “fear center” is often associated with depression as it is responsible for the fight-or-flight response either real or perceived fear that triggers the release of cortisol, the stress hormone.
“The mPFC called the “me center” and the amygdala “fear center work off each other to cause depression. The me center gets worked up reacting to stress and anxiety, and the fear center response leads to a spike in cortisol levels to fight a danger that’s only in your mind. Research has found that meditation helps break the connection between these two brain regions.”
By consistently practicing meditation, you are better able to ignore these negative sensations of stress and anxiety and stress levels fall.
