Marta Vieira Da Silva “Marta” as she is popularly known is regarded as the best female football player of all time. She has won Best FIFA Female World Player of the Year award for six years in a row.
She started playing football barefoot on the streets at the age of 7 in a small town where no other girl played. She wouldn’t take no for an answer when she was repeatedly told “it’s a boys sport”. Raised by a single mother who worked tirelessly to provide for the family of 4, she found the strength from her mum who never gave up.
Marta remarks that sports has changed her life completely and she sees sports as an empowering tool for women. She speaks of the challenges women athletes face with fewer sport options, fewer support and training opportunities which makes it difficult for talent to be discovered.
She purposefully uses her life story of challenging stereotypes, overcoming barriers and following her dreams to inspire girls and create opportunities so that next generation doesn’t have to go through what she did.
